“The Importance of Being Earnest” at the Hale Theatre & Butterfly Wonderland Tour

May 12, 2018 (Saturday)

Be prepared for a visually stimulating day! Our morning finds us taking in a special Scottsdale area attraction, Butterfly Wonderland. This highly innovative, indoor rainforest environment features the largest butterfly pavilion in America. Marvel as thousands of butterflies from around the world fly freely, alighting on fragrant flowering plants and, quite possibly, your shoulder. While there we will enjoy a no-host lunch. This afternoon we take out seats in the Hale Centre Theatre to enjoy their matinee performance of “The Importance of Being Earnest”.  This is the story of two bachelors, John ‘Jack’ Worthing and Algernon ‘Algy’ Moncrieff, who create alter egos named Ernest to escape their tiresome lives. They attempt to win the hearts of two women who, conveniently, claim to only love men named Ernest. The pair struggle to keep up with their own stories and become tangled in a tale of deception, disguise and misadventure. With a few new twists, this hilarious comedy will delight one and all. We travel back to Tucson with great memories of our very visual day!

Kitt Peak National Observatory Night-Time Tour

June 11, 2018 (Monday)

Travel with us to Kitt Peak National Observatory, located at 7,000’ in the Quinlan Mountains, for this very special evening.  With 23 optical and two radio telescopes, it is the largest, most diverse gathering of astronomical instruments in the northern hemisphere. We begin our tour with a stop at their Visitor Center where we will examine the exhibits that describe this national observatory and other interesting topics.  We enjoy a light meal and then have a docent-led introduction to astronomy and the night sky.  Next, we learn how to identify stars and the constellations.  Once we are outdoors we will explore the night skies and view them with high-powered binoculars.  Then we enter one of the domes to view through a telescope and observe the night skies in all its grandeur.  Come along and discover your universe.  If you’ve never participated in one of the night-time Kitt Peak programs before you are in for a very pleasant surprise. Warm clothes are a must! Good walking shoes (closed toe), pants (not shorts) and a jacket are highly recommended. (In case of inclement weather we reserve the right to insert an alternate astronomy program presented by Kitt Peak National Observatory.)
