Day 1 – Sonoita & Patagonia

This morning we depart to explore Southern Arizona, beginning with a stop in Sonoita to have lunch, learn about and taste the wines of the region. We travel to Patagonia State Park for a Lake Discovery tour on pontoon boats. Watch for the beautiful migrating birds that flock to this area at this time of year. This evening we check into the magical and timeless Tubac Golf Resort & Spa for our 3-night stay. This former 1800’s ranch now features luxurious hacienda-style guest rooms, with architecture reminiscent of the Spanish Colonial times, clustered across the grounds of the resort with easy access to dining, golf, spa, and swimming. There are even bicycles for rent and a walking trail on site. The beautiful rooms feature fireplaces, Spanish tiles, sitting area or separate living room and private patios. (L)

Day 2 – Tubac New Year’s Eve

Today we explore the town of Tubac and the Tubac Presidio State Historic Park. Experience the history of the Spanish colonial period and the settlement of the territory that would eventually become Arizona and roam this destination for the arts featuring over 100 eclectic shops and world-class galleries. After some rest in the afternoon, we put on our party hats for a dinner and New Year’s Eve celebration at the resort. (B,D)

Day 3 – New Year’s Day

We relax at the resort this morning and get together for a New Year’s Day brunch at the onsite Stables Restaurant. Enjoy views of the golf course made famous in the Kevin Costner and Rene Russo film Tin Cup. We then offer a choice of fun activities—a salsa making class, with a chance to create and name your own blend and compete against others or a golf skills challenge that includes putting, chipping and a closest to the pin contest. Spend the rest of the afternoon at leisure at the resort. (Brunch)

Day 4 – Return Home

After three days exploring Southern Arizona and enjoying the relaxing resort we depart to go home, but not without out two more historic stops. First, we visit Tumacácori National Historical Park, which protects the ruins of three Spanish mission communities, including the Mission San Cayetano de Tumacácori established in 1691. The site was also on the route of the 1775-1776 Juan Bautista de Anza Expedition from New Spain to Alta California. We then travel to the Mission San Xavier del Bac, which stands in stunning contrast to Tumacácori, as a restored and active church, originally finished in 1797 on the site of Father Kino’s 1692 mission. The oldest intact European structure in Arizona, the church’s interior is filled with marvelous original statuary and mural paintings. You can truly step back in time and enter an authentic 18th Century space, whose white exterior rises in beauty as “The White Dove of the Desert.” After a docent-led tour, it will be time to return home.
