Day 1 - Fly to Houston
We begin our tour with an afternoon flight from Tucson to Texas, where we stay overnight and prepare for the following day’s flight and our arrival on the island of Roatan.
Day 2 - Roatan
Our 3-hour flight to Roatan sends us over the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Ocean. In Roatan, we check into The Mayan Princess, our oceanfront hotel for 4 nights. This afternoon we explore the sights and sounds of Roatan’s most remarkable beach, West Bay. The white sands, palm trees, cold drinks…it’s all part of island life! Our guided tour down the beach highlights all the best places to snorkel, eat, shop, and of course, relax. The large, freshwater pools at The Mayan await if you want a relaxing swim, or your snorkel kit awaits if you want to explore the underwater world just in front of you. We’ll gather for our Welcome Dinner and end the night gazing at the black sky with a seemingly endless plethora of stars. (B,D)
Day 3 - Caribbean Snorkeling, Boat Tour
Ready for the underwater world? Grab your snorkel kit (provided for all 4 days) and let’s check out the world’s second largest barrier reef! Situated only a 2-minute, relaxing swim from our hotel, our professional Divemaster will accommodate your snorkeling preference – standing up, beginner snorkel (gentle swimming), or advanced snorkeling. We’ll take plenty of underwater pictures and videos of you in this tropical paradise. After an independent lunch, we embark on a guided boat tour of the island. This tour stops at a boat-exclusive snorkel dive site, Bears Den. Our professional Divemaster will lead the group, pointing out and teaching about different fish, corals, and underwater life. Want to relax, but be in the water and use your mask to see everything? We provide tubes for you to relax, check out the underwater world and soak up the Caribbean water and shoreline. As you reflect on your full day of the beautiful Caribbean Ocean, you have a myriad of restaurant choices to satisfy your palate. (B)
Day 4 - Roatan
Today we enjoy the best of Roatan’s land sights. We head out to a rescue animal park for a guided tour of their remarkable animals. Can you believe you can hold a 3-toed sloth? Or, what about when the capuchin monkey jumps on your shoulder? The majestic scarlet macaws: can you put your arm out and let them pose for the camera? We’ll be in front of you, taking all the pictures and videos you want. We’ll leave this park and head over to feed hundreds of green iguanas. As they clamor for your treats, you’ll learn about how a local family saved the population of these beautiful creatures. Back on the microbus, we’ll traverse the island to arrive at a popular, oceanfront restaurant, the Beach Grill. Their BBQ, seafood and generous portions are noteworthy! West End Beach is our afternoon destination. This tropical area offers a guided walking tour, chocolate tour, shopping, German gelato, and a cove shaped beach. Want an oceanfront massage? Want to bring your swimsuit or snorkel kit? Want to do nothing? Do it all. After a relaxing afternoon, we will have an independent dinner and head back to the hotel. (B,L)
Day 5 - Free day on the Island
Today is all yours. By now, you’ve seen much of the island, and we’ve gathered a diverse list of excursions for you to choose from today. Before heading out, remember your oceanfront hotel boast two pools and a jacuzzi, beach lounge chairs, spa services, restaurants, and bars. Ready to explore? Enjoy a dolphin encounter, 9 or 18-hole golf, a glass bottom boat tour, a whole-island tour, volunteerism, a guided snorkeling tour, an eco-nature park, horseback riding, and more. Hard choices, we know. We’ll gather for dinner and prepare to trade the island life for the rainforest. (B,D)
Day 6 - Yacht Trip & Jungle Rainforest
We leave Roatan on a catamaran yacht for our 90-minute boat ride to the mainland of Honduras. Watching for spinner dolphin and hawksbill turtles, we see the majestic mountain peaks of the mainland appear out of the clouds. After arrival, we’re going green for the next 4 days. Lush, colorful, and vibrant…the rainforest brings a combination of beauty, adventure, and wildlife to our senses. Our first stop is a 400-foot suspension bridge over the life-giving Cangrejal River. We’ll listen for the krill of the keel-billed toucan, watch for the bright blue morpho butterfly, and absorb the beauty of this national park and wild river. After a hearty German lunch, we travel deep into the wild jungle of Pico Bonito National Park, the most famous park in Honduras. Our home for the next 3 nights is The Lodge and Spa at Pico Bonito, noted as one of the “Top 10 jungle eco-lodges of the world”. From your own luxury rainforest cabin, explore this amazing ecosystem, overflowing with extraordinary wildlife. We eat all our meals at the Lodge while staying there. (B,L,D)
Day 7 - National Park & Birds
As morning breaks, the sights and sounds of a national park jungle rainforest are everywhere. On our morning guided birding hike, keep counting the birds! Over 400 species of birds are recorded here. Throughout the day, we explore the on-site Butterfly House and the slithery Serpentarium. After lunch, each person is treated to a private 30-minute rainforest spa treatment. Want more? Schedule your optional, additional spa treatment for today or tomorrow. Take a few laps in the pool and watch the hummingbirds buzz in and out the deep red flowers. Our guide will lead a brisk jungle hike to close out the afternoon as we prepare for our dinner together. After dinner, anyone ready for a dark night hike? This area is famous for a large population of jungle cats! (B,L,D)
Day 8 - Wildlife Refuge & More!
We’ll head out of the rainforest for the morning and travel to another ecosystem: the marine estuary of Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge. During the one-hour ride to the beginning of our estuary journey, we learn about the north coast of Honduras. Our journey to the estuary begins in a small train that was previously used to haul pineapples and coconuts. The 35-minute ride takes us through small villages and pineapple fields. At the water’s edge, we load our guided boats and push off in this ocean-meets-river environment. At this wild refuge, there are troops of monkeys, manatees, crocodiles, bats, alligators, and wetland, wading, and edge-habitat birds. More than 350 bird species have been recorded here. The cameras will be busy on this ride! After the tour, we relax on our way back to The Lodge. The afternoon offers optional activities including a guided Flora & Fauna walk, spa treatments, the pool, the Butterfly and Serpentarium areas, and hiking. Dinner in the Main Dining room and prepare for departure in the morning. (B,L,D)
Day 9 - Ferry Boat Ride & Beach (one more time!)
We depart The Lodge and arrive at the port of La Ceiba for our catamaran yacht trip to Roatan. On this return trip, we can see all four Bay Islands, all teeming with a rich history of Caribbean life. Ho! Ho! Ho! It’s a pirate’s life for me! We check into a nearby hotel for our last night. After experiencing the beautiful beach one last time, we enjoy our Farewell Dinner watching the orange sun descend below the blue water. (B,D)
Day 10 - Travel Home
Today we leave Roatan and travel back to Tucson and reminisce of special memories that we made in this best-kept-secret spot in Central America. (B)
