Day 1 – Charleston
We fly to Charleston, where a local guide joins us on a driving tour of the city. Three nights’ lodging in Charleston.
Day 2 – Charleston
The Fort Sumter National Monument sits prominently at the mouth of the Charleston Harbor, a strategic location that was crucial to its defense. Our morning begins with a cruise to Fort Sumter from Liberty Square in downtown Charleston. The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge provides the backdrop for all Fort Sumter cruises, with Charleston’s stately Rainbow Row and Battery homes clearly seen from onboard. Approaching Fort Sumter National Monument, graceful sailboats and the possibility of dolphin sightings add to the photogenic scene. At Middleton Place, America’s oldest landscaped gardens, we explore over 65 acres of formal and colorful gardens. (B)
Day 3 – Low Country
Founded in 1676 by the Drayton family, Magnolia Plantation has survived the centuries and witnessed the history of our nation unfold before it, from the American Revolution through the Civil War and beyond. It is the oldest public tourist site in the Lowcountry, and the oldest public gardens in America, opening its doors to visitors in 1870 to view the thousands of beautiful flowers and plants in its famous gardens. We tour the former plantation this morning, then have the rest of the day to explore Charleston at our leisure. (B)
Day 4 – Parris Island to Savannah
Our first stop this morning is pure whimsey – we tour a kazoo factory in Beaufort, SC! Kazoobie Kazoos, LLC, has been manufacturing plastic kazoos in the USA since 1999. They ship nearly one million kazoos a year to all points on the globe. The Kazoo Museum contains historical kazoos from the collections of Boaz Frankel, Barbara Stewart, and Rick Hubbard. We’ll learn all about how the kazoo was invented and we’ll get to make our own to take home!
Next, we visit famed Parris Island. Parris Island is the site of Marine recruit training, but it is also home to the Parris Island Museum. Today, we can explore the long and rich legacy of the United States Marine Corps as well as the exciting history of the Port Royal region. Thousands of artifacts, images, and other materials illustrate the varied stories within the exhibit galleries, from Native American to modern Marines. The 10,000-square-foot facility houses exhibits that focus on the long and honored history and traditions of the Marine Corps. On display are artifacts covering Port Royal’s important military role, from the American Revolution to the Civil War, along with development of the island into a Marine Corps installation after the Spanish-American War through the present.
Tonight we will eat dinner at Lady and Son’s in the downtown historic district! Three nights’ lodging in Savannah. (B,D)
Day 5 – Savannah
Today, we will save a riverboat cruise down the Savannah River. The river is the borderline between South Carolina and Georgia. It is home to one America’s largest and most active ports.
The downtown historic district is noted for its ‘squares’, each unique in aesthetic and locals. Savannah is a wonderful discovery of fun, laid back culture that is the Southeast. Many will love exploring its food, drinks, and history.
Day 6 – Tybee Island
This morning, we’ll visit the Owens-Thomas House and Slave Quarters. We’ll be guided through one of the finest examples of Regency architecture in America, as well as the original slave quarters designed to house the enslaved men, women, and children who maintained it. The tour includes an exploration of the lives and complicated relationships of the most and least powerful people in 19th-century Savannah. (B)
The adventure continues in the afternoon as we make way for Tybee Island at the Fort Pulaski National Monument. For much of the 19th century, masonry fortifications were the United States’ main defense against overseas enemies. However, during the Civil War, new technology proved its superiority to these forts. The Union Army used rifled cannon and compelled the Confederate garrison inside Fort Pulaski to surrender. The siege was a landmark experiment in the history of military science and invention. Our next stop is Tybee Island Light, a lighthouse next to the Savannah River. It is one of only seven surviving colonial era lighthouse towers. (B)
Day 7 – Savannah
On our final morning in Savannah, we head to the American Prohibition Museum. Exhibits, historical memorabilia, and artifacts bring this dry chapter in America from 1907-1933 to life. We’ll learn about this fascinating period of American history, and its interesting ties to NASCAR. We head back to Tucson on our flight from the Savannah airport. (B)
For departures from outside of Tucson, please call for special air pricing. Itinerary subject to change.

BAGGAGE
We have arranged for handling for one piece of luggage per person regarding the skycaps (where available) and hotels. If you check through luggage note that the maximum weight for the checked piece of luggage is 50 pounds and maximum size is 62 inches (length + width + height). If your bag weighs over 50 pounds the airlines will levy an extra fee that you will be responsible to pay. If you feel the need to lock your checked through luggage and your bag is searched, your lock could be damaged in the process. You can purchase a TSA (Transportation Security Administration) accepted and recognized lock at any luggage store. Make sure you ask for a TSA approved lock. These locks are the kind that TSA screeners can open by using a special tool without breaking. Passengers can carry-on 1 bag (dimensions are limited to 10x16x24 inches), plus a personal type bag, like a purse. We advise that you pack your carry-on lightly. There are restrictions regarding your carryon baggage and contents due to enhanced security
measures. Attached find a list regarding commonly asked about items as well as an update. If you have further concerns, please visit the TSA's Web-site at www.tsa.gov. There is room inside the motorcoach for your hand carried bag.
CHECKED BAGGAGE FEES
On American Airlines our scheduled airline for this tour, passengers are assessed a $30 fee per checked in bag, by the Airlines, upon checking in for the flight.

The traditional end-of-tour gratuity to your tour director is not included. If you feel your Tour Director helped you enjoy your tour, we suggest you enclose a gratuity in an envelope and present it individually at the end of the tour.
