Day 1 - Tucson to Albuquerque

Today we traverse New Mexico on our quest to the glorious national parks and monuments of Colorado. We enjoy lunch in Lordsburg and continue up through Hatch to Albuquerque. We stay one night at the Drury Inn which offers an evening reception with food and cocktails on arrival. (L)

Day 2 - Great Sand Dunes National Park

Crossing the border this morning into Colorado we arrive at Great Sand Dunes National Park, where the tallest dunes in North America are the centerpiece in a diverse landscape of grasslands, wetlands, conifer and aspen forests, alpine lakes and tundra. Of course the park is known for huge dunes, like the towering Star Dune, and for the seasonal Medano Creek and beach created at the base of the dunes, where we picnic and enjoy the flowing water. We also take a 30-minute walk on the Montville Nature Trail to see forest, Mosca Creek, and a view of the first ridge of dunes and spend time at the Visitor Center. Tonight, we check in at the Embassy Suites Colorado Springs for a two-night stay. (B,L)

Day 3 - Garden of the Gods & Pike's Peak National Landmarks

This morning we make our way to the Garden of the Gods National Natural Landmark, which comprises 1,300 acres of sandstone rock formations. We start in the Visitor Center at their new Geo-Trekker Theater and travel through one billion years in less than 15 minutes, plunging into deep hot magma, seeing dinosaurs, ancient sea monsters and more. We soar high above Garden of the Gods and see some of the most awe-inspiring aerial footage in the world. Then our park guide will join us as we take a one-hour tour through the formations. After lunch we continue to Pike’s Peak for a ride on a scenic cog railway to the top. The railway has installed new track and is set to re-open just before our visit in 2021. The summit of Pike’s Peak is a National Historic Landmark that holds a special place in American history. It was this incredible view that inspired the famous lyrics to “America the Beautiful.”  (B)

Day 4 - Rocky Mountain National Park

Today we drive along the Front Range through Boulder, with its famous Flatirons rock formations. We continue through canyons alive with wildlife up to Estes Park, the charming town at the entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park and check in for a one-night stay. We enter Rocky Mountain National Park this after lunch and find the best spots for wildlife viewing, photographs, walks, optional short hikes or just relaxing as we wind our way through the scenic Rockies to Silverthorne, which sits near the highest point on the Continental Divide, for a one-night stay at the Hampton Inn Silverthorne. (B,D)

Day 5 - White River National Forest Adventures

Today we take a mellow jeep tour with local guides through the White River National Forest, where we see wildflowers, gorgeous vistas and wildlife. This adventurous day continues with a scenic ride to the top of Vail Mountain on their summer gondola. We then cross into western Colorado and stay for one night at the Wine Country Inn in Palisade near Grand Junction. (B,L)

Day 6 - Colorado National Monument & Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

This morning we encounter Colorado National Monument, where towering monoliths exist within a vast plateau and canyon panorama. Experience sheer-walled, red rock canyons along the twists and turns of Rim Rock Drive, where we may spy bighorn sheep and soaring eagles. Then we travel to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, which surrounds part of a deep, steep-walled gorge carved through Precambrian rock by the Gunnison River. Take in views of Black Canyon’s dramatic drops and the striated Painted Wall cliff. As we descend to the river wildlife sightings may include mule deer, elk and golden eagles. We have dinner at The Stone House and stay one night at the Holiday Inn Express in Montrose. (B,D)

Day 7 - Canyon of the Ancients National Monument & Mesa Verde National Park

We travel through additional picturesque towns, like Telluride, as we make our way to Canyon of the Ancients National Monument & Mesa Verde National Park, where we explore ancient dwellings and cultures. We spend our final night in Gallup, New Mexico at the Hilton Garden Inn. (B)

Day 8 - Petrified Forest National Park & Home

Today we travel through the Petrified Forest National Park and two national forests, Apache-Sitgreaves & Tonto, as we make our way home with a stop for a farewell lunch at the Torreon Golf Club in Show Low. (B,L)
