Day 1 - Fly to San Jose, Costa Rica
We fly to San José, Costa Rica’s capital city, and transfer to the Hilton Garden Inn La Sabana, where we lodge for two nights.
Day 2 - Poás Volcano, La Paz, and Doka Coffee Estate
We begin our exploration at Poás Volcano National Park and view this powerful symbol of the geothermal forces that formed Costa Rica. Almost a mile across, it is the largest active crater in the world. La Paz Waterfall Gardens Nature Park is our next stop as we enjoy beautiful nature and the home to many rescued animals. After lunch, we travel to the largest coffee plantation in Costa Rica: Doka Estate Coffee Plantation. Learn everything about the process related from cultivation to processing…from bean to cup! Afterwards, we enjoy a delicious welcome dinner at our hotel. (B,L,D)
Day 3 - Tortuguero National Park
We travel through the lush Braulio Carrillo National Park rainforest, en route to Tortuguero National Park, where we embark on a guided boat tour of this area. On the northern Caribbean coast, this area showcases amazing rivers, lakes and wetlands that shelter a lush jungle of primary forests and exotic plants. We visit the nearby village with our guide and learn about the hawksbill, green, and leatherback sea turtles which nest on the beach every year. Located in an unspoiled jungle close to the ocean, the all-inclusive Laguna Lodge is home for the next two nights. (B,L,D)
Day 4 - Tours in Tortuguero National Park
Considered “The Amazon of Costa Rica”, Tortuguero National Park is a tropical wetland filled with exotic flora and fauna waiting to be discovered. We travel by boats, and on foot, to explore the extensive network of waterways and rainforest that winds through the wildlife-rich vegetation. Watch for monkeys, sloths, iguanas, crocodiles, frogs, flowers, turtles, and birds by the hundreds. (B,L,D)
Day 5 - La Fortuna & Arenal Volcano
We enjoy an early breakfast, take a boat ride, drive through volcanic meadows, and stop in Guápiles for lunch. Continuing through the northern lowlands, we see one of Costa Rica’s most popular landmarks, the symmetrical cone-shaped volcano called Arenal. Hotel Los Lagos is our hotel for a 2-night stay, and there is plenty of time to enjoy the hot springs at the hotel before dinner. After dinner, we embark on a guided night hike at the Arenal Oasis Wildlife Refuge. (B,L,D)
Day 6 - Arenal Hanging Bridges
Our day starts early as we are guided through Arenal Oasis Wildlife Refuge looking for more than 400 bird species. From the opening in the forest to deep within, our birding guide also points out the interesting flora and fauna. Monkeys, colorful birds, sloths and reptiles are abundant and likely to make an appearance for our cameras. After lunch, the famous Hanging Bridges take us into the treetops. This walk can be at your own pace, and you can enjoy nature at this first-ever suspension bridge in Costa Rica. This evening our dinner is at Finca Don Juan Organic Farm. (B,L,D)
Day 7 - Jungle Crocodile Safari Tour & Manuel Antonio
After breakfast this morning, we leave the La Fortuna area and drive south to the Pacific Coast and board our boat for the Tarcoles River Crocodile Tour. We navigate through mangroves and a wild river, teeming with wildlife. The crew takes us up-close to American crocodiles, from babies up to 17 feet long. Keep alert as snakes, anteaters, raccoons and other jungle wildlife are at the water’s edge. We continue to the Manuel Antonio area, where we lodge for two nights at the oceanfront Karahe Beach Hotel. (B,L,D)
Day 8 - Manuel Antonio National Park
After breakfast, we walk the trail in Manuel Antonio National Park with a guide, who shows us, through his telescope, animals like three-toed sloths, troops of monkeys, birds, and snakes. We arrive at the gorgeous beaches of Manuel Antonio National Park to soak up the sun for a while. Those with a stronger sense of adventure may choose to enjoy any, or all, of the park’s four beaches. After lunch, we have the option to go into the nearby town of Quepos for shopping, or return to the resort to enjoy the pool, ocean front beach, and other facilities. Our sunset dinner will be at the amazing El Avión Restaurant, which is inside a C-123 Fairchild cargo plane, that overlooks the Pacific ocean. (B,D)
Day 9 - San José
After breakfast, walk the beach one last time before departing for San José. After lunch, we enjoy a guided city tour and have time for souvenir shopping. A farewell dinner this evening at our hotel is a special end to the day. (B,D)
