Day 1 - Departure to Virginia

We fly from Tucson to Richmond, Virginia and stay overnight at Hilton Garden Inn, where we enjoy a Welcome Dinner that includes wine and beer to toast to our arrival! (D)

Day 2 - Jamestown

Today we begin with a visit to Historic Jamestown, the actual location of the 1607 James Fort where archeologists continue their work today discovering secrets of how the settlers lived and unearthing long-lost churches, homes, and grave sites. We will continue to the Jamestown Settlement where we enjoy lunch and visits through this living history museum with recreations of the Jamestown Fort, the Powhatan Indian Village, and three ships. This afternoon we continue to historic Williamsburg to check into the Williamsburg Lodge for our 4-night stay. (B,L)

Day 3 - Yorktown

Today we see where America’s independence was won at the site of one of the last Revolutionary War battles, Yorktown. The visitor center exhibits include the field tents used by General Washington during this important 1781 battle. We’ll walk through the 18th century town and put on the battlefield we’ll see numerous fortifications and canons; the Moore house, scene of the surrender negotiations; and Surrender field, among other sites. After a picnic lunch, we continue to the American Revolution Museum to explore an immersive gallery of exhibits as well as outdoor re-creations of homes, farms, and battles. The New York Times named the museum one of its 52 Places to Visit in 2019. Tonight, we’ll have dinner near our hotel in Williamsburg. (B,L,D)

Day 4 - Colonial Williamsburg

An exciting day is planned in Colonial Williamsburg, an 18th century city known as the largest living history museum, boating over forty sites and trades, four historic taverns and two world-class art museums. Lunch today will include characters in historical dress to take you back in time at Shields Tavern. Colonial Williamsburg truly offers something for everyone, whether your interest be hands-on activities, tours or 18th century buildings, or their unmatched folk-art collection. (B,L)

Day 5 - Virginia Beach

A trip to coastal Virginia would not be complete without exploring Norfolk and Virginia Beach. We start at the Norfolk Botanical Garden to see their beautiful collections of roses, camellias and other flowers, and their very popular Butterfly House. We continue on to Virginia Beach for an ocean-front lunch on the boardwalk. In the afternoon, we head to the extensive Mariners’ Museum and Park, featuring the remains of the ironclad USS Monitor and a collection of over 200 tons of priceless artifacts recovered from the iconic Civil War ship. The museum is filled with fascinating stories and is considered one of the most comprehensive maritime museums in the world. (B,L)

Day 6 - Monticello

Monticello, the home of the author of the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson, is not-to-be-missed. The estate is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its architectural beauty and historical significance. We will take a tour of the house and grounds and enjoy lunch from the Monticello Farm Table Café. Tonight, we check in to the gorgeous Virginia Crossings Hotel for our final 2 nights in Virginia. (B)

Day 7 – Richmond & Montpelier

This morning an expert local guide will take us through the important sites of historic Richmond, including the state capitol, Broad Street, Jackson Ward and Monumental Church. We then continue to Montpelier, the lifelong home of James Madison, Father of the Constitution, architect of the Bill of Rights and fourth President of the United States; and his beloved wife Dolly. The house and landscape appear as they did in Madison’s time and the site also includes a center dedicated to the Constitution. Our last visit of the day will be to Scotchtown to see the original standing home of Patrick Henry, patriot and orator of the Revolution. This is the home where he conceived his famous “Liberty or Death” speech.  Tonight, we have a farewell dinner, including a glass of wine, to toast goodbye to Virginia.   (B,L,D)

Day 8 – Return Home

On our final morning we will depart from Richmond to home.

ACTIVITY LEVEL RATING

The Activity Level 3: Moderate.

Expectations: Expect a moderate amount of walking. There will be time to rest on the coach and between attractions. To enjoy this tour, you should be prepared to walk slightly longer distances, climb stairs and tolerate periods of standing, for example on city walks, sightseeing stops or ship excursions. The daily pace and timing can fluctuate significantly between longer and shorter travel days, with additional activities possibly occurring in the early morning or evening. There may be some changes in altitude or temperatures.

Appropriate for: Most travelers beginning with those who are moderately fit, lead semi-active lives, are comfortable participating in long days of activities and expect some physical exertion.

ITINERARY

For your reference, we send to you a detailed itinerary approximately 3-4 weeks prior to the scheduled tour departure. This has day-by-day times and events, hotel information where you can be reached in case of an emergency, and airline information.

The times listed on the itinerary are all approximate. We cannot be held responsible for schedule changes due to unforeseen circumstances with the weather, transportation agents, highway conditions, hotels or contracting agents.

AIRLINE TICKETS

You will be issued your boarding pass the morning of our departure, after your arrival at the Tucson International Airport or other city of departure. If you have an United Airlines frequent flyer number, or a TSA number, please call our office at least 3 days prior to the tour to ensure we can note these in your reservation.

If you are joining the tour from locations other than Tucson, we make other arrangements for you to join the tour. Please call our office for more details.

AIRPORT SECURITY

Do not forget to bring your government issued picture ID to show at the airport. A Driver’s License or Passport is preferred. If you do not have the proper ID, the airline will turn you away.

BAGGAGE

We have arranged for handling for one piece of luggage per person regarding the skycaps (where available) and hotels. If you check through luggage note that the maximum weight for the checked piece of luggage is 50 pounds and maximum size is 62 inches (length + width + height). If your bag weighs over 50 pounds the airlines will levy an extra fee that you will be responsible to pay. If you feel the need to lock your checked through luggage and your bag is searched, your lock could be damaged in the process. You can purchase a TSA (Transportation Security Administration) accepted and recognized lock at any luggage store. Make sure you ask for a TSA approved lock. These locks are the kind that TSA screeners can open by using a special tool without breaking. Passengers can carry-on 1 bag (dimensions are limited to 10x16x24 inches), plus a personal type bag, like a purse. We advise that you pack your carry-on lightly. There are restrictions regarding your carryon baggage and contents due to enhanced security
measures. Attached find a list regarding commonly asked about items as well as an update. If you have further concerns, please visit the TSA's Web-site at www.tsa.gov. There is room inside the motorcoach for your hand carried bag.

CHECKED BAGGAGE FEES

On United Airlines our preferred airline for this tour, passengers are assessed a $30 fee per checked in bag, by the Airlines, upon checking in for the flight.

EMERGENCY CONTACT

It is always a good idea to carry on your person a list of medications that you are taking and an emergency contact phone number while you are traveling. And we suggest making a copy of the itinerary and provide it to a friend or family member.

GRATUITIES/ITEMS INCLUDED IN PRICE

The traditional end-of-tour gratuity to your tour director is not included. If you feel your Tour Director helped you enjoy your tour, we suggest you enclose a gratuity in an envelope and present it individually at the end of the tour. Simply as a guideline, one may consider a per person, per day gratuity of $8.00 per tour guide as an average to be modified by one’s own personal experience. All hotel porterage and airport skycap (when available) fees are included. We also include the gratuities for the coach/livery drivers. Maid tips are not included.

LIVERY

For your convenience, we have a (round-tour) door-to-door pickup service with each multi-day tour. (This service is not available to all clients depending on your location.) Approximately 2 to 3 days prior to the departure date you will receive a call from our office and we will tell you your assigned pickup time. (These times can vary up to 15 minutes depending on traffic.)

LODGING REQUESTS

If you would like to request special accommodations at the hotel(s) where we are lodging, please call us as soon as possible and we will forward these requests for you. The phone numbers of the hotel(s) where we are staying are listed on the itinerary.

Many hotels around the country have instituted a "reconditioning fee" of $300 or more that is levied upon a guest that smokes in a non-smoking room. If this occurs during our tour you will be responsible for paying this fee to the hotel prior to check-out.

TRAVEL REQUESTS

We pay close attention to your requests but please realize that these are merely requests and cannot be guaranteed.

WEATHER AND CLOTHING/MISC. SUGGESTIONS

The average daytime high temperatures during our stay in springtime Virginia is typically very pleasant - High's in the upper 70's to mid-80's during the day and 60’s at night. When we are on or close to the Atlantic Ocean those temperatures drop 5-10 degrees or more. Typically, the air is much more humid than in Tucson and we can expect some Spring storms.
