Day 1 - Fly to Cancún
Bienvenidos! Welcome to Mexico. We will be met at the airport by one of our local hosts and provided a private transfer to our hotel for the evening. This afternoon, we enjoy a welcome drink and attend a briefing at the hotel conducted by our Tour Guide. One night’s lodging in Cancún.
Day 2 - Ek’ Balam
Our adventure begins as we depart for Ek’ Balam, one of the most extensive Maya sites. We continue to Hacienda Selva Maya for lunch and the opportunity to view cenotes (sink holes and natural sources of groundwater). We arrive at our hotel, Hacienda Sotuta de Peón, and have time to relax before dinner at the hotel and one night’s lodging. (B,L,D)
Day 3 - Sotuta de Peón
In the late 1800s to early 1900s, haciendas henequeneras (Yucatan estates) thrived throughout the region when the henequen (a native plant) industry debuted. Sotuta de Peón remains one of the few that have operated continuously. This morning, we tour the hacienda, then enjoy lunch there. We continue to Campeche. The evening is ours to explore this vibrant port town. Two nights’ lodging in Campeche. (B,L)
Day 4 - Edzna
We continue along the Ruta Puuc to the Edzna archaeological site. Edzna was inhabited as early as 400 BC and its decline and abandonment remains a mystery. We join our Tour Manager for a walking tour of the “Historic Fortified City of Campeche,” recognized as a World Heritage Site. The evening is ours to continue exploring the city. (B,L)
Day 5 - Uxmal
This morning, we venture to Uxmal, one of the region’s most impressive sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Later, we visit the village of Santa Elena and the humble Maya home of Don Hernan and Doña Azaria to learn more about the Maya traditions and way of living. The evening is at our leisure. One night’s lodging in Uxmal. (B,L)
Day 6 - Biosphere Reserve & Mérida
We have an early departure for Celestún, where we venture through mangroves on small boats to experience the Biosphere Reserve’s diverse wildlife. After lunch on our own on the beaches of Celestún, we arrive in Mérida, “The White City,” and have the evening to explore the cultural center of the Yucatan Peninsula. Two nights’ lodging in Mérida. (B)
Day 7 - Mérida
We join our Tour Guide for a morning tour of the colonial city of Mérida. Next will be a visit to the stately Casa de Montejo. We enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before returning to our hotel for an afternoon at our leisure. (B,L)
Day 8 - Izamal & Chichén Itzá
Today, we continue to the charming colonial town of Izamal, one of Mexico’s “Pueblos Mágicos.” With cobblestone streets and vibrant yellow Colonial buildings, Izamal is a jewel of the Yucatan. This afternoon we visit the famous Mayan-Toltec ruins of Chichén Itzá, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dinner is at our hotel. One night’s lodging in Chichén Itzá. (B,L,D)
Day 9 - Valladolid to Cancún
We travel through the charming colonial town of Valladolid, another of Mexico’s Pueblos Mágicos, and arrive in Cancún. The afternoon is ours to relax. We gather for our farewell dinner this evening and enjoy our last night’s lodging in Cancún. (B,L,D)
Day 10 - Travel Home
After breakfast at the hotel, we get ready for the flight back home, elated, after a tour that delighted all our senses. (B)
