Day 1 - New Orleans

Ho, ho, ho and away we go! We fly our jet-propelled sleigh to New Orleans, which is just brimming with holiday cheer. Tonight, we learn the secrets of authentic Creole cooking and then savor the results at the New Orleans School of Cooking. We lodge four nights at the Bienville House, nestled between Royal and Bourbon Streets. (D)

Day 2 - French Quarter & Steamboat Natchez

A local guide acquaints us with the French Quarter. The excitement and attractions of the Vieux Carre are right at our doorstep. As we hear the history and stories of the French Quarter we walk to Jackson SquareSt. Louis CathedralRoyal Street’s iron grillwork balconies and antique shops, Bourbon Street’s boisterous clubs, and historic Café du Monde. This afternoon, we cruise the Mississippi on the Steamboat NATCHEZ, which features Christmas caroling as well as sightseeing. (B)

Day 3 - Houmas House

This morning is free time to explore the French Quarter on our own. There’s something for everyone: shopping, museums, historic buildings, watching river traffic on the Mississippi, or partaking of delicious Creole cuisine. In the afternoon we drive upstream to the Houmas House Plantation and Gardens, the setting for the film Hush…Hush, Sweet Charlotte. As we tour the house, we learn how the sugar baron owners lived in the 1800s. Then we view the enormous bonfires along the levee of the Mississippi that local Cajun families build to light the way for Papa Noel on Christmas Eve. (B,D)

Day 4 - Christmas Day

Christmas morning is free time to attend a church service or to enjoy a subdued French Quarter morning. Our afternoon city tour takes us beyond the French Quarter to see the cosmopolitan city: shotgun cottages on Esplanade AvenueSt. Louis Cemetery where burials are above ground in elaborate tombs, the lush oaks of City Park, the infinite blue of Lake Pontchartrain, and the Garden District’s Greek Revival architecture of the 1800s. Tonight we drive to Celebration in the Oaks at City Park, where the majestic oaks and lagoons are adorned with miniature lights and mammoth ornaments. Christmas Day dinner tonight! (B,D)

Day 5 - New Orleans & Fly Home

We enjoy one last attraction, at Mardi Gras World, the world’s largest float-building company, we learn about the history of Mardi Gras and get an insider’s view of how Mardi Gras is made. New Orleans has been an enchanting city to visit for the Christmas holidays. Now we fly home with happy memories of the history, the beauty, the atmosphere, the music, and the people of New Orleans.
