Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a holiday in which Mexicans remember and honor their deceased loved ones. It is both a festive and colorful holiday and a deep and mystical experience, recognized by UNESCO as a cultural heritage event for humanity. Villagers throughout Mexico empty out of their homes to clean and decorate the family gravesites, don colorful costumes and participate in a grand parade to honor their loved ones. We experience the festivities, culture, architecture and history of Oaxaca, then continue our cultural journey in Mexico City. Striking scenery, ancient history, authentic cuisine and a lively arts scene come together here to create an unforgettable journey.

Framed by the Sierra Madre del Sur Mountains, Oaxaca is as diverse in landscape as it is in culture. To the south is the Pacific Ocean, and the coastline claims stunning beach resorts such as Huatulco and Puerto Escondito. The city of Oaxaca – a popular and alluring destination – rests roughly 300 miles south of Mexico City. Aptly nicknamed “Tierra del Sol” (The Land of the Sun), Oaxaca sits 5000 feet above sea-level, giving it a beautiful, temperate climate suitable for endless exploring. Just outside Oaxaca City grows the magnificent Árbol del Tule. With a reported age of over 2,000 years, this is widely known as world’s oldest tree. The trunk of this Montezuma cypress measures a remarkable 42 meters (137 feet) in diameter. Oaxaca City features a wealth of cultural experience. The essence of ancient civilizations remains alive here in vivacious markets, old-style handicrafts and enduring colonial architecture dating back to the city’s 16th-century establishment. Wander through the lively downtown streets to take in the history and the innovation as one. Galleries, museums and restaurants now find their homes in expertly restored colonial buildings.

Day 1 – Arrival in Oaxaca

We arrive at the Oaxaca airport, and transfer to the beautiful Victoria Hotel,* our home for four nights.

Day 2 – Monte Alban

Our first visit will be to the market where we will learn about the ingredients of the local cuisine and the materials used for the celebration. We will also visit the archaeological site of Monte Alban, a great city on the hill that reigned for 1200 years. The remains of this great city reveal an already advanced culture with temples, pyramids, palaces, and ball courts. During the evening we will attend a cooking class, enjoy the preparations, and enjoy a welcome dinner. (B,L,D)

Day 3 – Ocotlan & Jalietza

At the traditional market in Ocotlan we see the elaborate black pottery. Afterwards, we travel to the town of Tilcajete, famous for its wood carvings of mystic figures, “Alebrijes”. In Jalietza we see artisans creating elaborate and beautiful embroidery cloth products. Evening will bring a leisurely dinner at a local restaurant. After dinner, we will visit the cemetery to see the altars with their offerings and decorations of the graves. We will also see the colorful carpets of marigolds, sand, and sawdust that adorn the streets welcoming the spirits. (B,D)

Day 4 – Mitla & Mezcal

Today, we will visit the archaeological site of Mitla, “the place of the dead”. This place was built around 800 AD with amazing architecture and striking grecas that adorn the walls. We will stop at Teotitlan to see the woolen and woven goods produced, and the techniques using natural dyes to color them. We will learn about the production of Mezcal, made from the blue agave plant, see the distillery, and sample some of the products. Lunch is at the distillery – yum! On the way back to Oaxaca, we will see the 2,000-year-old Tule Tree, a gargantuan Mexican cypress, the widest tree in the world. Tonight, we will enjoy the masquerade parade with people dressed in skeleton and devilish costumes evoking the dead. They parade, dancing from house to house, and receiving fruit, candy, and chocolate from each family’s altars. (B,L,D)

Day 5 – Mexico City

Today we travel to Mexico City with a stop for an included lunch. After, we check in at the lovely Barcelo Hotel,* we have leisure time to explore. (B,L)

Day 6 – Teotihuacan & Museum of Archaeology

Today begins with an early departure to visit Teotihuacan, one of the largest and most impressive archaeological sites in Meso-America (the pre-Columbian cultural region extending from the southern part of Mexico into Central America). Here we see some of the most architecturally significant Mesoamerican pyramids. We have lunch there before our return to Mexico City and a visit to the Museum of Archaeology. Tonight, we have a farewell dinner at renowned Hacienda de Los Morales with our fellow travelers. (B,L,D)

Day 7 – Depart to Tucson

We transfer to the Mexico City airport and head home to Tucson, with memories of this feast for our minds, souls, and bellies. (B)

ITINERARY

For your reference, we send to you a detailed itinerary approximately 3-4 weeks prior to the scheduled tour departure. This has day-by-day times and events, hotel information where you can be reached in case of an emergency, and airline information.

The times listed on the itinerary are all approximate. We cannot be held responsible for schedule changes due to unforeseen circumstances with the weather, transportation agents, highway conditions, hotels or contracting agents.

AIRLINE TICKETS

You will be issued your boarding pass the morning of our departure, after your arrival at the Tucson International Airport. If you have an American Airlines frequent flyer number, or a TSA number, please call our office at least 3 days prior to the tour to ensure we can note these in your reservation.
If you are joining the tour from locations other than Tucson, we make other arrangements for you to join the tour. Please call our office for more details.

AIRPORT SECURITY

Do not forget to bring your government issued picture ID to show at the airport. A passport is required for travel to Mexico. If you do not have the proper ID, the airline will turn you away.

BAGGAGE

We have arranged for handling for one piece of luggage per person regarding the skycaps (where available) and hotels. If you check through luggage note that the maximum weight for the checked piece of luggage is 50 pounds and maximum size is 62 inches (length + width + height). If your bag weighs over 50 pounds the airlines will levy an extra fee that you will be responsible to pay. If you feel the need to lock your checked through luggage and your bag is searched, your lock could be damaged in the process. You can purchase a TSA (Transportation Security Administration) accepted and recognized lock at any luggage store. Make sure you ask for a TSA approved lock. These locks are the kind that TSA screeners can open by using a special tool without breaking. Passengers can carry-on 1 bag (dimensions are limited to 10x16x24 inches), plus a personal type bag, like a purse. We advise that you pack your carry-on lightly. There are restrictions regarding your carryon baggage and contents due to enhanced security measures. Attached find a list regarding commonly asked about items as well as an update. If you have further concerns, please visit the TSA's Web-site at www.tsa.gov. There is room inside the motorcoach for your hand carried bag.

CHECKED BAGGAGE FEES

On American Airlines our airline for this tour, passengers are assessed a $35 fee per checked in bag, by the Airlines, upon checking in for the flight.

EMERGENCY CONTACT

It is always a good idea to carry on your person a list of medications that you are taking and an emergency contact phone number while you are traveling. And we suggest making a copy of the itinerary and provide it to a friend or family member.

GRATUITIES/ITEMS INCLUDED IN PRICE

The traditional end-of-tour gratuity to your tour director is included. All hotel porterage and airport skycap (when available) fees are included. We also include the gratuities for the coach/livery drivers. Maid tips are not included.

LIVERY

For your convenience, we have a (round-tour) door-to-door pickup service with each multi-day tour. (This service is not available to all clients depending on your location.) Approximately 2 to 3 days prior to the departure date you will receive a call from our office and we will tell you your assigned pickup time. (These times can vary up to 15 minutes depending on traffic.)

LODGING REQUESTS

If you would like to request special accommodations at the hotel(s) where we are lodging, please call us as soon as possible and we will forward these requests for you. The phone numbers of the hotel(s) where we are staying are listed on the itinerary.

Many hotels around the country have instituted a "reconditioning fee" of $300 or more that is levied upon a guest that smokes in a non-smoking room. If this occurs during our tour you will be responsible for paying this fee to the hotel prior to check-out.
