Phoenix: An Insider’s Tour

May 20, 2019

Book Now

This tour takes us “inside” downtown Phoenix as the temperatures outside start to heat up. We will start with a guided tour of the historic Orpheum Theatre, which originally opened in 1929 to house Vaudeville shows. Designed by architects Lescher and Mahoney, it was designed in the atmospheric style with the audience sitting in a garden, surrounded by Spanish-style buildings and murals of mountains and forests under puffy white clouds moving across a deep blue domed sky. We will have lunch in another Lescher and Mahoney building, Hanny’s Department Store, built in 1947 in the International Style. Once an upscale men’s clothing store, it is now a restaurant with a truly unique interior. We will also visit the Wells Fargo History Museum, which celebrates western development and the history of the stagecoach. The collection includes a replica stage coach, gold and precious minerals, a replica mine shaft, antique firearms, working telegraph and other artifacts depicting western development, and the world’s largest collection of famed illustrator N.C. Wyeth’s western-themed work.
