Reno National Championship Air Races & Lake Tahoe

September 16, 2022 thru September 19, 2022

Escape with us for a long weekend to the recreation and gambling hotbed of Reno and Lake Tahoe. The highlight of this getaway tour is The STIHL National Championship Air Races – the last event of its kind, carrying on the tradition of the Cleveland Air Races of the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. The Reno Air Races have become an institution for northern Nevada and aviation enthusiasts from around the world. For one week, the high desert north of Reno becomes home to hundreds of aircraft, their pilots and crews. The event features seven racing classes, a large display of static aircraft with military and civil flight demonstrations. We also visit the National Auto Museum, with over 220 rare, one-of-a-kind antique and collector cars, and tour the area around Reno, including Virginia City and the state capital of Carson City, before taking a scenic cruise on Lake Tahoe.

Day 1 - Tucson to Reno / Auto Museum

This morning fly into Reno, Nevada, “The biggest little city in the world”, which has garnered international recognition as a destination for art, culture, and tech innovation. After an independent lunch in the Riverfront District, bordering the Truckee River, we tour the National Automobile Museum. The Museum has more than 220 rare, one-of-a-kind, antique and collector cars with authentic street scenes and sounds that bring displays to life. With artifacts, a theatre presentation, audio tours, and a Museum Store – there’s lots to see and do. Afterwards we check into our hotel for a 3-night stay, the Grand Sierra Resort. The property offers a wide variety of activities, including branded retail shopping, headliner entertainment, Cineplex, a 50-lane championship bowling center, outdoor thrill rides, aqua golf driving range, the largest casino north of Las Vegas, plus much more. Tonight, we enjoy a group welcome dinner. (D)

Day 2 - Reno Air Races

After breakfast at the Resort, we head to the National Championship Air Races and Air Show, which has been named as “America’s Best Air Show” and recognized as one of the “10 Best Air Shows in the World.” We’ll have reserved seats for the event, which combines the world’s fastest motorsport with spectacular military and civilian air entertainment to offer the most unique air racing event in existence. Six different classes of race planes thrill fans as they speed around the Reno Air Races course, marked by pylons. The pylons are actually telephone poles about 50 feet tall (the “sticks”), with specially made, marked drums (the “cans”) mounted at their tops. Many have bright orange-red panels to increase their visibility to pilots, who may be traveling anywhere from 150 to almost 500 mph as they circle the racecourse, sometimes at just 50 feet from the ground. Today is multi-aircraft heat racing. Besides the on-your-feet racing, spectators can experience up-close access to aircraft, pilots and crews in the “pits.” There’s also a world-class air show, aircraft and drone displays, military aircraft and loads of vendors. It’s an experience you’ll never forget! (B)

Day 3 - Lake Tahoe or Reno Air Races

Today you have the choice of two activities. For airplane enthusiasts, you can enjoy another day at the Air Races and Air Show. Sunday has another full day of racing, stunts and has the Gold-medal Championship Races. Or you may choose to join us as we enjoy a motorcoach tour of the area. We visit Virginia City, which is home to Victorian buildings built during a 19th-century mining boom. These include the reportedly haunted Washoe Club and stately Piper’s Opera House. Then we visit the Nevada state capital of Carson City, named after the mountain man, Kit Carson, before venturing on to gorgeous Lake Tahoe, the largest alpine lake in North America. It is known for the clarity of its water and the panorama of surrounding mountains on all sides, and we take a wonderful, leisurely cruise on the Lake. Regardless of which option you choose for your daytime activity, we will all enjoy a group dinner tonight to cap off our tour. (B,D)

Day 4 - Fly Home

After breakfast at the Resort, we fly back to Tucson with terrific memories of this weekend getaway in Reno. (B)

ACTIVITY LEVEL

Activity Level 2: Relaxed

Expectations: This tour requires light physical activity combined with shorter travel days. Tour members should expect intermittent walking, with occasional slight inclines and stair climbs, including boarding the motorcoach. Activities may include an occasional city or nature walking tour, stopping along the way. Guests should be able to climb a set of stairs, walk up or down slight slopes and navigate some uneven terrain or cobblestone.

Appropriate for: Travelers who are somewhat physically fit and comfortable with longer days of touring (both walking tours and coach time).

ITINERARY

For your reference, we send to you a detailed itinerary approximately 3-4 weeks prior to the scheduled tour departure. This has day-by-day times and events, hotel information where you can be reached in case of an emergency, and airline information.

The times listed on the itinerary are all approximate. We cannot be held responsible for schedule changes due to unforeseen circumstances with weather, transportation agents, highway conditions, hotels or contracting agents.

AIRLINE TICKETS

You will be issued your boarding pass the morning of our departure, after your arrival at the Tucson International Airport. If you have an American Airlines frequent flyer number, or a TSA number, please call our office at least 3 days prior to the tour to ensure we can note these in your reservation.

If you are joining the tour from locations other than Tucson, we make other arrangements for you to join the tour. Please call our office for more details.

AIRPORT SECURITY

Do not forget to bring your government issued picture ID to show at the airport. If you do not have the proper ID, the airline and border security will turn you away.

BAGGAGE

We have arranged for handling for one piece of luggage per person regarding the skycaps (where available) and hotels. If you check through luggage note that the maximum weight for the checked piece of luggage is 50 pounds and maximum size is 62 inches (length + width + height). If your bag weighs over 50 pounds the airlines will levy an extra fee that you will be responsible to pay. If you feel the need to lock your checked through luggage and your bag is searched, your lock could be damaged in the process. You can purchase a TSA (Transportation Security Administration) accepted and recognized lock at any luggage store. Make sure you ask for a TSA approved lock. These locks are the kind that TSA screeners can open by using a special tool without breaking. Passengers can carry-on 1 bag (dimensions are limited to 10x16x24 inches), plus a personal type bag, like a purse. We advise that you pack your carry-on lightly. There are restrictions regarding your carryon baggage and contents due to enhanced security measures. Attached find a list regarding commonly asked about items as well as an update. If you have further concerns, please visit the TSA's Web-site at www.tsa.gov. There is room inside the motorcoach for your hand carried bag.

CHECKED BAGGAGE FEES

On American Airlines our scheduled airline for this tour, passengers are assessed a $35 fee per checked in bag, by the Airlines, upon checking in for the flight.

EMERGENCY CONTACT

It is always a good idea to carry on your person a list of medications that you are taking and an emergency contact phone number while you are traveling. And we suggest making a copy of the itinerary and provide it to a friend or family member.

GRATUITIES/ITEMS INCLUDED IN PRICE

The traditional end-of-tour gratuity to your tour director is included on this tour. All hotel porterage and airport skycap (when available) fees are included. We also include the gratuities for the coach/livery drivers.

LIVERY

For your convenience we have a (round-tour) door-to-door pickup service with each multi-day tour. (This service is not available to all clients depending on your location.) Approximately 2 to 3 days prior to the departure date you will receive a call from our office and we will tell you your assigned pickup time. (These times can vary up to 15 minutes depending on traffic.)

LODGING REQUESTS

If you would like to request special accommodations at the hotel(s) where we are lodging, please call us as soon as possible and we will forward these requests for you. The phone numbers of the hotel(s) where we are staying are listed on the itinerary.

Many hotels around the country have instituted a "reconditioning fee" of $300 or more that is levied upon a guest that smokes in a non-smoking room. If this occurs during our tour you will be responsible for paying this fee to the hotel prior to check-out.

TRAVEL REQUESTS

We pay close attention to your requests but please realize that these are merely requests and cannot be guaranteed.
