Day 1 - Tucson to Riverside
Travel to Riverside, California where we stay one night at the Hyatt Place, centrally located in the beautiful downtown. Sixty miles east of Los Angeles, Riverside boasts a number of firsts, including Southern California’s first polo field and golf course. The city also gave birth to the California citrus industry, an entire empire built around the sweet and zesty navel orange. Two dozen nationally registered historic sites and more than 100 city landmarks commemorate this city’s flavorful history, which you can get a taste of as we take a walking tour on arrival. Riverside is known for its dining scene and you’ll have a free evening to explore it.
Day 2 - Santa Barbara
We spend the morning traveling to Santa Barbara, where we start with a harbor cruise of the town’s coastline before checking in for 3 nights at the Harbor View Inn, a resort style hotel with an ideal location for those wishing to experience the best that Santa Barbara has to offer; from the beautiful coastline to the charming shops and restaurants along State Street. Culture is around every corner as you walk around Santa Barbara with heavy influences of early Hollywood and the very first days of the Spanish missionaries. From the basketry and boat-building techniques of the Chumash Indians, to the Spanish Colonial influence and the first days of filmmaking, Santa Barbara’s history is vast and truly unique. Our hotel is within walking distance to State Street, the beach and Stearns Wharf, which is the oldest working wharf in California. Tonight, we will enjoy a group dinner in Santa Barbara. (B,D)
Day 3 - Santa Barbara
Each morning in Santa Barbara you can begin with the hotel’s complimentary continental breakfast of light pastries and coffee or on you own try one of the many local cafés, bakeries or restaurants for breakfast. This morning we have a guided tour of the historic Old Mission Santa Barbara. With its grand double-bell towers, lush gardens and the majestic San Ynez mountains as a backdrop, the Mission is one of the city’s most picturesque landmarks. Known as “Queen of the Missions” for its exceptional beauty, the Santa Barbara Mission was founded by the Spanish Franciscans in 1786. History comes alive as we explore the grounds, church and on-site museum, where we see fascinating 17th-century art, artifacts and re-creations of the Mission’s living quarters and kitchen, complete with an original adobe wall. Outdoors, we admire the graceful architecture, explore the colorful gardens and take in expansive views of the city and the Pacific Ocean. Next, we have a group lunch and then a guided tour of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. SBMA’s renowned 27,000-piece permanent collection spans both the centuries and the globe. Take your time to explore and then stroll back to the hotel. (CB,L)
Day 4 - Santa Barbara
This morning an easy 45-minute drive over the hill into the Santa Ynez Valley reveals rolling vineyards as far as the eye can see and a quintessential wine country experience winding through the area’s small communities. A local guide will take us on a tour of this beautiful region, including wine tastings and a picnic lunch. We have some free time in the afternoon to take in the sea air or further explore the town of Santa Barbara and tonight we will have a farewell to Santa Barbara dinner at a local restaurant. (CB,L,D)
Day 5 - Channel Islands & Palm Desert
As we say goodbye to Santa Barbara, we make another seaside stop, in Ventura, where we visit the Channel Islands National Park Visitor Center. Channel Islands National Park encompasses five remarkable islands and their ocean environment, preserving and protecting a wealth of natural and cultural resources. Isolation over thousands of years has created unique animals, plants, and archeological resources found nowhere else on Earth. After lunch we travel to Palm Desert and check in for one night at the Homewood Suites, which offers a complimentary evening reception with light snacks and drinks or you can walk to several restaurants. (CB,L,R)
Day 6 - Joshua Tree NP & Travel Home
On our final day, on our way back to Tucson, we visit Joshua Tree National Park, with two distinct desert ecosystems, the Mojave and the Colorado. A fascinating variety of plants and animals make their homes in a land sculpted by strong winds and occasional torrents of rain. Dark night skies, a rich cultural history, and surreal geologic features add to the wonder of this vast wilderness in southern California. We have a picnic lunch and then travel home. (B,L)
