Day 1 - Tucson to Santa Fe

We’ll travel east by motorcoach to Santa Fe. After a stop for lunch in Lordsburg, New Mexico, we arrive in the evening to check into the Inn & Spa at Loretto with its iconic adobe architecture adjacent to the historic Plaza for our 4-night stay. Tonight, we enjoy a group welcome dinner, where you’ll get to know your tour guide and other travelers. (L,D)

Day 2 – Historic Santa Fe & The Magic Flute

This morning a local guide will take us on a walking tour of historic Santa Fe Plaza, with a stop at the Chapel of Loretto. You will have free time to explore the Plaza on your own at lunchtime. Then, we will enjoy an afternoon and evening at the Santa Fe Opera, including a Backstage Tour, an opera Preview Dinner and a performance of The Magic Flute. In this Mozart opera a serpent, an evil queen, a bird catcher, and a magic flute send Prince Tamino on his way to rescue his princess, Pamina. But her mother, the Queen of the Night, stands in his way. For love to prevail, Tamino and Pamina must traverse through fire, water and more. The opera is sung in German with a screen providing instant English translation. (B,D)

Day 3 – Museums of Santa Fe

Today we visit three amazing museums and have one amazing dining experience. Our first visit is the Georgia O’Keefe Museum, which lets us explore the life, art and legacy of the modernistic painter. A visit to the O’Keefe Museum offers insight not only into the artist’s paintings, but also her creative process and the light and landscape that inspired her. Next, we go to Museum Hill to visit the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture and the Museum of International Folk Art. (B)

Day 4 – El Santuario de Chimayo, Glass, Sculpture Weaving, & M. Butterfly

Our exploration of Santa Fe culture continues with visist to two workshops, the Shidoni Gallery and Sculpture Gardens and Teseque Glassworks, where we see a demonstration of glass-blowing. Then on to El Santuario de Chimayo for a guided tour. With its thick adobe walls, two bell towers and a six-foot crucifix, this small church is considered a prime example of Spanish Colonial architecture. The shrine at the site is a National Historic Landmark and some believe the dirt at the site has healing properties. Lunch today is at El Rancho de Chimayo, a restored ancestral family home serving up delicious food and traditions. We see a demonstration at Ortega’s Weaving Shop then back the opera tonight to see this year’s world premiere of M. Butterfly. Sung in English, this is the story of Rene Gallimard, a civil servant at the French embassy in Beijing who falls in love with a beautiful Chinese opera singer named Song Liling, who holds two shocking secrets, both of which eventually bring Gallimard professional and personal ruin. Broadway’s smash hit is transformed to operatic form. (B,L)
